"Intellectually rigorous ... lively, engaging and entertaining. This tuition went way beyond the exam syllabus. I was stretched, challenged and questioned into thinking far more originally and independently. Rob's teaching was more akin to an undergraduate tutorial than any A level lesson I have encountered."

In 2006 I graduated from Oxford with First Class Honours in English. Since then I have taught privately throughout London. I have also taught History from year 7 through to A level at Christ's Hospital, a co-educational boarding school in Sussex.
I offer a highly personalized service, devoting my utmost attention to a pupil's unique requirements. I help keen but intellectually chaotic young people to think clearly and express themselves with confidence and style. My lessons build upon the student's strengths and interests, stressing the relationship between spoken and written English.
I specialize in teaching academically strong pupils who wish to be stretched, such as undergraduates and those looking to enter the leading universities. As well as being in demand for exam preparation and Oxbridge interview coaching, I have been a popular guide for those with a private enthusiasm for books. I also have experience of teaching students with special educational needs. I have led essay workshops for sixth form groups.
My own interests range widely in the western tradition, from the innovations of Charlemagne to modern farce, via eighteenth century aesthetics. Although I took my degree in English, I have found the boundary between cultural and historical studies to be largely artificial. Lutheran satirical woodcuts undertake a symbolic bestialization of the human form which was acted out in the atrocities of St Bartholomew’s Day; a similar exploration of the monstrous occurs in the plays of Ben Jonson and the private sketches of Inigo Jones. My teaching of politics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is substantially informed by my interest in the literary and aesthetic dilemmas of the period.
I charge £45 per hour plus travel, most frequently teaching lessons of 90 minutes or two hours. References are available on request.
